Constituton Project, Inc.

The Mission: Constitution Project, Inc., a Florida non-profit, was founded by Joseph Cofield, for the purpose of putting a copy of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence in the hands of every 5th grade student in Florida. That is a huge task, as there are over 200,000 5th graders in 67 different Florida counties, but progress is being made thanks to Joseph's extraordinary efforts!

The How: Joseph began his mission in April 2014 and since then, many amazing things have happened. To gather support for his mission, in April of 2015 he began his 27 - 67 Journey Across Florida - visiting each of the 67 Florida counties, riding his bike 21 miles and running 6 in each county (one mile for each of the 27 Amendments). That is over 1,800 difficult miles meeting with state and county officials, school personnel and service organizations.

My Trip to DeSoto County

June 26, 2015

Attached is an example of the great joy that I am getting with my journey across Florida sharing the Constitution with the citizens of Florida.

I will attach more of journey later this weekend!

Please do enjoy and keep those prayers and support coming my way.

Joseph

Territory is but the body of a nation. The people who inhabit its hills and valleys are its soul, its spirit, its life.
----- James A. Garfield

I have found this to be true as I have now completed eight of the 67 counties of Florida. It is truly the people of this great state which make life such a joy to love and work.

I believe that the 200,000 plus 5th grade students of Florida will have those Constitution booklets in their hands come September 2015 because as I talking with the good people of Florida they understand the importance of our youth learning the Constitution and the working of our government as well as understanding the rich history of our "Republic" so in that regard I seek your support in helping me complete this journey!

Heading to Sarasota County

America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.
                                                                                                                   ---- Harry Truman

June 25, 2015 was a great rest day for me. I did no except rest and sort out the information from my journey in the eight counties that I have completed so far.

Below is the counties and school districts that I have visited so far:

  1. Collier County               -  April
  2. Lee County                    -  May
  3. Charlotte County          - June
  4. DeSoto County              - June
  5. Hardee County             - June
  6. Highland County          - June
  7. Henry County               - June
  8. Glades County              - June

For you information these are the next counties that I will traveling:

  1. Sarasota County
  2. Manatee County
  3. Hillsborough County
  4. Pinellas County
  5. Pasco County
  6. Citrus County
  7. Sumter County
  8. Lake County
Therefore, I am on my way to Sarasota County so that I can continue my journey.

I do want to say that the highlight day happened in the evening (June 25, 2015) when I got to witness the Rotary Club of Naples Collier installed their new officer during the 2015 - 2016 Installation Dinner at the Cypress Woods Golf and Country Club.

I owe many thanks to Nanci Reid, outgoing President Rotary Club of Naples Collier, for supporting the Constitution program and making it part of the Rotary sponsored projects. President Reid not only has established this project in the Rotary Club of Naples Collier but have encouraged other Rotary Club to do the same. She has gone to the District Governor and challenged as well to make the Constitution project the same as the Webster Dictionary project similar to the success that has been achieved at the 3rd grade level across the nation.

When you see that each of the 200,000 plus 5th grade students of Florida have obtained their Constitution booklets it is will be because President Nanci Reid had the vision and courage as President to implement this bold project into the Rotary Club network.

I truly believe if more leaders would do more and take positive action such as President Reid has done our youth and our nation will be in great shape for generations to come. When one tells you that one person cannot make a difference you can take them that is not true.

You can share with them my great story of how President Nanci Reid upon hearing my story of the Constitution and the importance of getting the booklets to our youth made one of the greatest decision in the history of the Rotary Club by establishing the Constitution project for the 5th grade students of Florida.

When you view the website and follow the Face Book of the Rotary Club of Naples Collier and see their wonderful accomplishments you will fully understand why leaders such as President Reid command respect and admiration; she started from day one of being in charge to the last day making a difference in the lives of others.

This act of kindness motivates me to start my new journey across Sarasota County on Friday, June 26, 2015.

I leave quotes on my blog and I try to match it with how I feel at the moment. The quote today is not only how I feel but dedicated to one of the greatest leaders that I have known since I left the United States Army. We do have great leaders beside the ones that wear the military uniform and I indeed found one of those great leaders when I had the honor to meet Nanci Reid.

America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.

Hendry and Glades Counties are now complete

June 24, 2015

“Everyone needs beauty as well as bread, places to pray in and play in, where nature may heal and give strength to the body and soul alike.”

                                                                                                             ------John Muir

I never realized that pain could be so rewarding. I have gotten much wiser and do my running much earlier if before the light of the day because the trip to Hardee County made me realize that the cycling is okay even in the heat but the running is a killer.

It actually reached 98 degrees today and you will see from the posting of the picture from Glades County as I was standing near the board at the library which reflects 92 degrees. The great thing about cycling is that the breeze really keeps you cool and tend to forget how hot it is until you stop and take a drink of water.

I do manage to drink plenty of liquid and make stops along the way. When I am riding in the populated area it is nice. However, when I was cycling along those long roads with nothing but cows and field to remain me of my journey it is not fun.

Therefore, I believe those of you who love nature will appreciate the quote.

I will post more about my journey because it was one of the rewarding and exciting of all my trips so far. I not only visited the school districts and met with the superintendents but I got see a brand new combined Middle and High School in the Glades and the School District in the government complex during my visit to Hendry County.

You will be in for a treat as I share with you the story of cycling along the longest area of walking trail that Governor Lawton Chiles completed during his walk.

Just as they do on Sport Center on radio and the News on television; you have wait a little bit to read about my entire wonderful journey today. I am even going to give you a picture this time on my next post. Until then please enjoy one of my favorite quotes which I just got today from my mentor and great friend.

My trip to Hardee County

June 23 2015

If you like living and working in a small rural city than you will find "Wauchula" which is the county seat of Hardee County the place to be an educator. Hardee County has five elementary schools, one junior high school (finally a type school I grew up in) and only one high school.

I tested my ability to do 27 miles in the 93 degree heat yesterday by doing my entire miles on the bike which turned out to be a wise decision. I got to cover Wauchula and the Zolfo Springs which provided me with a lot of hills (upgrade) that I never find in the flat land of Naples which means a great work out and also a nice break going down hill.

My day started off with a blast because the local radio station (105.3 LA ZETA) announced my start of the 27 miles in Hardee County and even did it in Spanish for me which was important because the diverse population within the county. Many thanks to Sherry Good and her staff for making that possible. It felt like being handed the key to the city of Wauchula.

I was in for another great treat before starting my 27 mile journey. I arrived at the Hardee County School District and was greeted by some very nice people. Since David Durastanti, Superintendent of Hardee County School District, was in Tampa on at a meeting, I got the opportunity to have an outstanding chat with Bob Shayman, Deputy Superintendent.

Mr. Shayman actually met my favorite Governor of Florida (Governor Lawton Chiles); and when we started talking about education and strong values, I was seated right behind a picture of the Deputy Superintendent and Governor Chiles. Finally, I met someone who understood why I read the book Walkin' Lawton so many times and why I decided to base my 27 miles journey across Florida on the way Lawton Chiles walked across Florida.

Mr. Shayman is great supporter of the teaching the Constitution and when I left his office I knew this was an administrator who knew the importance of making sure our students knew the social science and especially the Constitution. I felt sure that Hardee County would work to get the Constitution booklets in the hands of their students because he stated, "I believe not only the 5th grade students but the junior high students as well." I could sense when I return to Hardee County Public Schools District those Constitution booklets will be in the hands of the students.

I had such a great time cycling around Hardee County that I just kept riding and riding because the wind was cooling me off so it did not feel so warm and I had plenty to drink along the way. You will see a few of my pictures when I post them this weekend as I show some of the views from my journey across Florida. I passed the Cracker Museum and not expecting to stop.

However, I found out quickly this was one of my best stops so far in my journey. My water bottle almost empty and the little water in it was very warm so I decided to make the loop in the nice park and ride along the mile trail by the Lions Club of Wauchula it was a great change of pace and flat land again.

I was glad to have my bike because I got to cover the entire park and needed a break so I stopped by the Cracker Trail Museum at Pioneer Park. This is worth the trip to Hardee County alone and it must be one of your stops in Florida. Tracy Duncan must have saw the look of a person needing a cold drink because she rushed to her ice box (yes they have those in the museum) and grabbed me her last Sparkling Ice Crisp Apple drink (my first time drinking this sparkling mountain spring water) and it hit the spot. My story goes beyond the water.

Tracy gave me a mini tour of the museum so I now got the experience of touring the outside with my bike and enjoying the air condition with a great tour. What amazing things in the museum! Tracy earned two of my 27 - 67 tee shirts as I have these to give out to very special citizens of Florida when I meet along the way. She listened to my story about attempting to get the Constitution booklets in the hands of all the 5th grade students across Florida and she even posted my story on the webpage of the museum. I learned that Mrs. Duncan son was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany where I spent a great part of my early adult life. Mr. Shayman father served in WWII so you can understand the rich history and pride of the honors in the middle of the town.

You will find these kind hearted people all across Hardee County and it was such a joy to meet such wonderful people. I have been in Naples for so long that I almost forgot this type of life style. As a young kid, I grew up in this type of area so I had a great flashback from my childhood.

The great journey across Hardee County allowed me to chat about the Constitution with people who cared so much about our nation and allowed me return to the my roots as a child which I almost forgot how much fun it was to enjoy the farm life.

Just think if it was not for my 27 - 67 Journey Across Florida talking about our Constitution and trying to get those booklets in the hands of our youth I would have not met a great part of the rural life of Florida. I look forward to my return one day with my wife to Hardee County which I will now stop saying in the middle of nowhere.

Speaking of my wife she always prepared with my healthy food and last night I needed it when I returned from my journey. The food, shower, and hot tub never felt so good.

Please continue to follow my journey as I next travel to Glades and Hendry Counties.

Great Start on Monday

June 22, 2015

An amazing day today, I managed to complete both DeSoto County and Highland County.

I was really glad that I got an early start today because the weather was very hot. Upon my completion in DeSoto County, I noted the 87 degree. However, I was determined to complete both DeSoto County and Highland County.

I met some wonderful people at both the Administration Office and the schools that I managed to visit along my cycling routes.

Please look forward to my next posting for the great details from my 27 - 67 Journey Across Florida.

On my drive to Highland County after leaving DeSoto, I had an opportunity to stop in Hardee County and the radio station will make a big announcement of my journey in Hardee County! The announcement will be in both English and Spanish which is super and the reason that I will make my first journey tomorrow in Hardee County.

If you in the listening area, you will be in for a treat if you tune to WZSP-105.3 FM and WZZS-106.9 FM  located 7891 US Highway 17 South Zolfo Springs, FL 33890  - 863-494-4111 - www.LaZeta.fm.

Another County is Completed

Today, June 17, 2015, I completed another 27 miles and established contact with the Charlotte County Public Schools District.

What an exciting day. I got up early because I could not sleep thinking about the wonderful day ahead of me. I checked my email and comment section for any new information. I have now started checking my Face Book now since many people are following my progress. I was really thrilled with the number of friends and family members following my journey across Florida.

My morning started at 5:00 a.m. and ended at 5:30 p.m. (a full work day) when I finally returned home to Naples. I will fill in my journey from today once I return from the Wellness Center/Fitness Center. I am now looking forward to a warm shower and the whirl pool.

Thanks for following my blog for today and I will indeed share my exciting day.

Our Deepest Fear

In February when I was struggling to convince others of the importance of getting those Constitution booklets in the hands of our students; I was introduced to a very wisdom man.

Nick Maverick just experienced the same process that I was experiencing and he took many hours of his time on the telephone and emails to help continue to lift my spirit to continue my mission of getting those Constitution booklets to the youth of Florida.

Nick left me with this wonderful quote by Marianne Williamson, spiritual activist, author, lecturer..., and I would like to share this quote with you as well because it really inspired me to get beyond my deep fear of not accomplishing the task of getting those Constitution booklets in the classrooms by September 2015.

I share with you on the eve of my official "Journey Across Florida" the quote below:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

I will be in Charlotte County on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 continuing the 27 - 67 project.

Flag Day - June 14, 2015

http://www.naplesnews.com/news/flags-get-proper-retirement-in-naples-ceremony_28405954

On June 30, 2014, I had a great opportunity to celebrate in Flag Day from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. It was indeed one of the most rewarding days that I have enjoyed; and without a doubt the greatest celebration I ever had on a Flag Day.

The Rotary Club of Naples-Collier started the celebration with their Honor Flag Project and Fundraiser with over 100 flags flying in front of Freedom Park. The Rotary Club President donated $1,500.00 toward helping to get the Freedom Park built.

The same Rotary Club of Naples-Collier will sponsor the 5th grade students of Collier County to get a Constitution booklet in their hands by September 2015. It is my hope that other sponsors will step up and do the same across Florida as we continue the 27 - 67 Journey Across Florida project.

The day continued after the presentation of the check and each flag stored with; a raised flag in honor of Tom Bossone, a 92 year old World War II veteran. We than had fun folding the flags in preparation for the flag burning ceremony.

Please check the Naples Daily News coverage of this wonderful event as well as our goal of getting the Constitution booklets in the hands of our 5th grade students of Florida.
